The Role:
As a Senior Engineering Manager at Ro, you’ll be responsible for the core platforms and operational systems that power how care is delivered at scale for our patients. You will lead a team building and evolving backend services and internal tools that enable efficient, reliable, and high-quality patient care. You and your team will thoughtfully and ambitiously increase automation across care operations, leveraging AI-driven capabilities to reduce manual effort and improve care delivery for thousands of providers and operators — enabling millions of patient interactions.
You will be directly accountable for a critical business function that sits at the intersection of healthcare delivery, product innovation, and engineering excellence. You’ll collaborate closely with engineering, product, design, data, clinical, and care operations leaders to support and evolve complex workflows such as task routing, appointment scheduling, provider access, billing, and prior authorizations — increasingly leveraging intelligent automation and decisioning to reduce manual effort, improve accuracy, and scale care delivery. Additionally, you will be accountable for continuing to strengthen our engineering practice, partnering with other engineering leaders to uplevel service quality, reliability, and architectural maturity.

What You'll Do:

  • Oversee technical direction and architecture for scalable, reliable, and resilient services that support Ro’s care delivery and operational workflows
  • Drive the integration of intelligent automation, AI/LLM capabilities, and agentic processes into core platform services to optimize complex care operations workflows
  • Partner with product, design, data, infrastructure, care operations, and clinical leaders to define strategy, roadmaps, and execution plans for complex platform initiatives
  • Support the design, breakdown, implementation, testing, and deployment of backend systems and internal tools that enable automation, visibility, and operational efficiency
  • Lead adaptable teams responsible for mission-critical systems with high expectations for performance and reliability
  • Manage and mentor a highly engaged engineering team of mixed career levels, supporting growth, feedback, and career development
  • Evolve engineering best practices, technical quality, and mentorship in the organization in direct collaboration with senior engineering leadership
  • Collaborate with senior engineering leadership to evolve architectural standards, operational maturity, and technical quality - both within your team and across the organization
  • Contribute actively towards the development of the organization, including team structure, recruiting, and hiring

What You’ll Bring to the Team:

  • 4+ years people leadership & management experience
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with significant experience building backend or platform systems
  • Proven track record of delivering impactful, reliable technical solutions in complex, high-stakes domains
  • Strong communication, analytical, and technical skills
  • Experience building scalable, high-throughput, highly available systems
  • Familiarity with our core stack languages including Python, TypeScript, and modern web or service-oriented architectures
  • Motivation to not only build technology, but to deeply engage with and take ownership of complex operational and workflows in healthcare
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong cross-functional relationships with product managers, designers, clinicians, and fellow engineering leaders
  • Comfort with AI/LLM workflows and agentic processes

The target base salary for this position ranges from $230,400 - $281,000, in addition to a competitive equity and benefits package (as applicable). When determining compensation, we analyze and carefully consider several factors, including location, job-related knowledge, skills and experience. These considerations may cause your compensation to vary.
Ro recognizes the power of in-person collaboration, while supporting the flexibility to work anywhere in the United States. For our Ro’ers in the tri-state (NY) area, you will join us at HQ on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For those outside of the tri-state area, you will be able to join in-person collaborations throughout the year (i.e., during team on-sites).
